Sierra Leone: Current Status

The country Sierra Leone was once under British control, but once their freedom was declared in April, 1961 they formed their own government, which was a Republic with a democratically elected president and a unicameral parliament. Each leader has to be voted into power and doesn’t have total control of the government. The economy right now is doing ok, with an estimated GDP of 1.44 billion. And a GPD growth rate of 5.8%(U.S Department of state) The people of sierra Leone are allowed to freely trade, and they are allowed to trade many goods. They sell many things to many countries, some of the goods and countries they sell to are 182 million in exports, and the items they sell are, rutile, diamonds, bauxite, coffee, cocoa, and fish. The countries they sell these items to are, Belgium, Germany, U.K., the Netherlands, India, and the U.S. while for the imports they spend around 534 million dollars and many products they are, foodstuff, machinery and equipment, fuel and lubricants, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, building material, light consumer goods, used clothing, and textiles. The countries the sierra Leone gets all of its goods from are Germany, U.K., U.S. and China. (U.S. department of State).                                                                                                       Currently Sierra Leone’s president is Ernest Bai Koroma. He was sworn in on September 17, 2007 and promised zero tolerance on corruption in his inaugural speech(One Minute World News) Sierra Leone has Many problems to deal with internally, which doesn’t allow them to worry about many other countries forging. Sierra Leone has kept close relations with the U.K. This is because although they let Sierra Leone becomes an independent country they decided to help Sierra Leone politically and economically. An example of the U.K. still staying involved with Sierra Leone  is when Sierra Leone was in a civil war, the U.K. sent over thousands of troops to help fight off the rebels, and in 2002 with the U.K.’s  help the war was ended.(one Minute World News)                                                                                                                                              Sierra Leone also has relations with China, Libya, Cuba, and Iran. Sierra Leone is a current member of the U.N. and relations with the U.S. and Sierra Leone are good. The U.S. continues to help aid Sierra Leone by sending about 29.558 million dollars. Their strongest allies are the countries they trade with the most and have diplomatic relations with. Their most powerful ally is the United Kingdom. Other countries consist of China, Libya, Cuba and, Iran. The country has many Ethnic groups and because of that there are many different religions. Some of the religions that are dominate are the Muslims that take up almost 60% of the area. Then Christianity follows at around 30% of the area. And finally there is Animist which takes up about 10% of the area(U.S Department of State) Because the state is a domestic state, it is not sponsored by any religion. That is the current status of Sierra Leone.
