Sierra Leone: Diamond Mines

Period 6

Sierra Leone has had a bloody, and brutal past with the countries diamond mines. Since the 1930’s the diamond mines have been used in the illegal mining and exporting in Sierra Leone. I say this because in 1991 a man named Joseph Saidu Momoh was said to be abusing his powers.  A group named the Revolutonary United Front(RUF) decied to rebel.  Their first goal was to “Combat Crime and corruption but it soon came clear that their main goal aim was to take control of the diamond mines.” (ScanSoft Trading Company Ltd.) the fighting continued until the RUF gained control of the diamond minds with and estimated purchase of 125 million dollars. There is a major controversy with illegal the illegal diamond exporting in Sierra Leone;  this is because although there is a lot of money to be made in the exporting of diamonds in Sierra Leone, there is also a lot of people dying because of the illegal exporting of the diamonds.

The is a clear colonial influence, and it is very bad. Because of the “blood diamonds” there has been a wide spread mass murder if the people of Sierra Leone within the last half century. Many rebel groups use the money from the illegal exporting of diamonds to fund the organizations for weapons. This then leads to many deaths of innocent people in brutal ways. A famous way was many arms and hands would be cut off by the rebel groups.

The issue has not changed very much since the end of the cival war.

There still is wide spread murder of thousands of people throughout Sierra Leone. But there has been some improbment because the government leaders hevent been abusing their power as much as they were ten or more years ago.

In conclusion the status of the “blood diamond” has led  to mass murder and chaos in the country of Sierra Leone. And the situation has gotten much better, but it is slowly improving.
